Research has shown us time and again the incredible healing effects nature can have on our health and well-being. We only need to ‘be’ in nature to experience its intrinsic power. And when it comes to the force of nature, there is no place quite like the beautiful New Zealand wilderness. The Marlborough Sounds, rich in natural beauty, with its many coves and bays and lush native bush lining the coast, creates the perfect location for stillness and connection.
Research by physician Qing Li, chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine, has scientific evidence that being with trees had significant positive effects on the subjects’ nervous systems. Forest bathing also known as Shinrin Yoku reduced stress hormone production, lowered blood pressure and heart rate, suppressed the sympathetic “fight or flight” system, and enhanced the parasympathetic “rest and recover” system. Participants reported feeling better, sleeping longer, and enjoying these effects for weeks following.
